Apothicairerie de Charlieu The first reference to an Apothecary’s in the French kingdom dates back from the 13th century.

The Apothecary’s, set in General Hospital, took on the welcome of the poor formerly held by the dergymen.

In 1495, a record is the first testimony of the existence of an Apothecary’s in the Paris General Hospital.

General Hospitals became, thefore, the architectural translation of this new sanitary trend, and the Apothecary’s became that of an ancestral expertise.

The parmaceutic pratice appeared in civilizations from very ancient times.

Its codified form was placed under the authority of the God of Medecine and the preparation of medicines was the result of cultural and magical rituals.

The three natural orders, mineral, vegetable and animal,were already present in the making of medecines.

This knowledge was recorded in numerous treaties, by authors such as Hippocrates and Galen.

This science, known from medieval Arab physicians, followed a long way to the West, where it has developped ever since.

Progress in medicine are underlined by the recent construction and the functional adaptation of the hospital buildings, which kept, however, their style.

Thus, this architecture, which became an element of the urban landscape, shows the historical inheritance.

And all the Apothicary’s instruments and the interior decoration bear witness to the evolution of medicine pratice along the centuries.
